Whenever I hit a rough patch, feeling unworthy and untalented, I try to forget about myself and my brooding thoughts by observing someone I really admire. Beatrice Alemagna is an illustrator and author who I return to again and again in these moments. It's something in the freedom with which she expresses the chaotic yet purposeful wildness of childhood. I love the looseness of her drawings, I love her use of pattern and collage, I love her two-dimensional nod to Eastern European folk art, early 20th century Asian prints, and contemporary fashion illustration. I'm jealous of the seemingly wild abandon with which she illustrates her characters and scenes. I'm grateful that she and her art exist. Have a look- this drawing is so sweet you'll want to eat it!
